Zamperla's big new Discovery in China

Antonio Zamperla, in conjunction with Soriani, has introduced the Giant Discovery 40, a new version of a popular spin and swing flat ride.

In operation since September, the new attraction is now open at Dinosaur Park in Changzou, China. Custom built for the site, the frisbee style ride has a footprint of 37.1m x 25.1m (122ft x 82ft) and a maximum axle height of 27m (89ft). The maximum height in operation is 44.8m with a maximum swing angle of 120?.

The giant circle is made up of eight connected arms with eight groups of five outward-facing suspended seats. Riders sit facing outwards - with feet dangling - in a circle of 40, each seat having individual shoulder and lap restraints.

They are then swung backwards and forwards in a pendulum motion while rotating counterclockwise. At the peak of the pendulum movement when it reaches a maximum speed of 110km/h (68 mph), riders are upside down 147ft above the ground.

The return drop generates a range of sensations depending on a rider's position in the counterclockwise rotation, creating a different ride experience each time.

Boasting a capacity of 800pph, Zamperla says that Giant Discovery 40 is 'the ultimate spin cycle' of its kind, with the ride's maximum height in operation of 44.8m (147ft) beating the previous record of 140ft set by a park in the USA last year.
